Supply and Demand Examples: The Top 5 News Articles & Media (updated 2022)

These are the best videos, podcasts, and news articles that we have found to teach supply and demand. They bring economics to life by showing students real-life examples and current events.

1.  People swapping Pork for Crocodile Meat | Vice (January 18, 2022)

One of the most fun examples of substitutes shifting demand curves— Consumers substitute away from pork to crocodile meat as pork prices rise.

2.  Tik Tok made me buy it | NPR The Indicator (January 14, 2022)

Another great example of demand shifting, this time it involves Tik Tok, so maybe more relevant for students.

3.  This motel room is 19% more expensive than the other rooms | Jadrian Wooten (May 23, 2022)

Crooks on the lam stayed in a motel room, now everyone wants to stay there, too. The strangest thing can shift the demand curve. What is the most weird/ most sentimental thing you bought (i.e. what do have a higher willingness to pay than anyone)?

4.  Summer School 2: Markets and Pickles | NPR Planet Money (July 15, 2020)

Learn about supply, demand, and the power of markets through one of my favorite planet money episodes of all time: the story of how some economists dramatically improved distribution of food throughout our nation’s homeless shelters by setting up a market.

5.  The curse of the Black Lotus | NPR Planet Money (December 26, 2018)

Another classic from Planet Money. The creators of Black Lotus, a card game with rare cards, were worried that it would suffer the same fate as Beanie Babies: a burst bubble. So they turned to laws of supply and demand to avoid it.
